Mission:
-
To assist both incarcerated and community-based offenders (under high-level Department of Corrections (DOC) supervision) with housing placement. The Offender Re-entry Housing Specialists (ORHS) coordinate with staff at correctional facilities and local probation/parole offices to provide program participants with the smoothest transition into housing possible.
-
To develop relationships with landlords who are willing to work with the program demographic in order to coordinate the lease agreement and other rules of tenancy. The ORHP also requires participants to have regular contact with program staff following housing placement (housing retention) in order to support them in their housing, assist landlords with any concerns before they become crises, and empower the participant to reach his/her goals.
-
To provide housing education classes, called Ready to Rent, for the purpose of breaking down barriers to renting, teaching “good tenant” tactics, and increasing participants’ awareness of their rights and responsibilities as tenants.
-
To advocate on the macro level for re-entry support services, including increased transitional and affordable permanent housing options, expanded substance abuse treatment, restorative justice programs, etc. Program staff also works hard to provide community education and awareness with regards to offenders transitioning back to the community. These are done with the larger goals of increasing housing options and sustainability for returning offenders in mind, as well as reducing stigma, with the hope to ultimately, lower recidivism rates and increase public safety.
Vision:
-
Permanent housing placement for eligible program participants
-
Collaborative relationships among ORHS, landlords, DOC staff, tenants and other involved service-providers.
-
Successful long-term tenancies supported by ORHP retention services (problem-solving, budgeting assistance, information/referral to available community resources, etc.).
-
Increased participant knowledge of the housing process, from pre-application through ending a tenancy via established housing readiness curriculum called Ready to Rent.
